Trade War Benefits – Decoupling … Hussman Commentary Excerpt … Stock Market Analysis… ETF Trading … Dow 30 Ranking

“Trade what you see; not what you think.” – The Old Fool, Richard McCranie, trader extraordinaire.

THE TRADE WAR IS REALLY ABOUT DECOUPLING? (CNBC)
“…the Nikkei business daily reported on Aug. 28 that Google is shifting its Pixel smartphone production to Vietnam from China starting this year and that the company is also looking to shift some of its smart home speaker assembly to Thailandmore than 50 other big names have moved out or scaled back. But the timing of Google’s reported plans and how they seem to have affected Beijing can’t be ignored…the benefits of American trade diversification and continued U.S. economic strength are giving the Trump administration the gift of time…In the end, simply looking out for U.S. security concerns above immediate economic benefits might have been the point of this trade war all along.” Story at…
My cmt: It has been a mistake to rely on China for so much of our manufacturing. But now, tariffs are forcing US companies to seek manufacturing partners out of China – that’s good.

On another tack, if the global warming extremists were paying attention, they would be calling for boycotts of Chinese manufactured goods since China is responsible for 40% of the world’s greenhouse gas production. If China had an incentive, they might reduce carbon emissions.

LARRY ADAM COMMENTARY EXCERPT (Raymond James)
“While economic headwinds are building (e.g., ISM manufacturing in contraction), our expectation is that strong consumer spending, a synchronized global easing cycle, and a president motivated by reelection should help the economy avert a recession over the next 12 months. Given record levels of negative yielding debt overseas, low (but still positive) rates in the US have reduced the upside potential for bonds longer term. In this low rate environment, US equity valuations are attractive, especially if S&P 500 earnings approach the consensus ~$176 estimate for 2020.” – Larry Adam, CIO, Raymond James. HUSSMAN MARKET COMMENTARY EXCERPT (Hussman Funds)
“In my view, investors are on the cusp of yet another very long period in which the stock market is likely to go “nowhere in an interesting way.” The “interesting” part is more likely to begin with steep losses than a further advance from these levels, but it will remain important to monitor the behavior of market internals, particularly if market behavior becomes uniformly constructive, in contrast to its current ragged condition. For now, as I observed in 2000 and 2007 based on similar conditions, I believe that the combination of hypervaluation and unfavorable market internals has opened a trap door that is permissive of abrupt and severe market losses.” - John Hussman, Phd. Commentary at…
My cmt: It’s hard to argue with the logic; it’s the timing that has been the problem for the bears.  My indicators should get me out of the market before I sustain too much damage (assuming there isn’t a 1987 event where the market dropped 22% in a day). That’s why it is important to pay attention to stock allocation and not get over invested in stocks, or at least, stick with an allocation with which you are comfortable. We might be only a tweet or two away from a big drop.

As a retiree with 50% invested in stocks, a 20% plunge would only take 10% out of the total portfolio.

MARKET REPORT / ANALYSIS
-Monday the S&P 500 was little changed at 2978.
-VIX rose about 2% to 15.27.
-The yield on the 10-year Treasury increased to 1.646%.

Internals looked very good today: 1809 issues on the NYSE advanced while only 1132 declined; there were 188 new, 52-week highs and only 16 new-lows; and up-volume outpaced down-volume 2,936,000,000 to 1,174,000,000. What’s not to like? Well, the S&P 500 was little changed.  I’d expect the S&P 500 to try and catch up tomorrow.

My daily sum of 20 Indicators increased from +3 to +10 (a positive number is bullish; negatives are bearish) while the 10-day smoothed version that negates the daily fluctuations improved from -13 to +4. (These numbers sometimes change after I post the blog based on data that comes in late.)

I remain bullish.

TOP / BOTTOM INDICATOR SCALE OF 1 TO 10 (Zero is a neutral reading.)
Today’s Reading: -1
-The Long-term Fosback Logic Index indicator was bearish, but this indicator isn’t valid now because the McClellan Oscillator remains positive.
- Most Recent Day with a value other than Zero: -1 on 9 September.
(1) +10 Max Bullish / -10 Max Bearish)
(2) -4 or below is a Sell sign. +4 or better is a Buy Sign.

MOMENTUM ANALYSIS:
Just a reminder…During corrections, momentum is generally not giving a very accurate picture, or at least it is giving a correction picture – it will change significantly when the correction ends. During the correction, Utilities will generally outperform as will similar Dow stocks, like Verizon. Momentum here is a short-term call.

TODAY’S RANKING OF  15 ETFs (Ranked Daily)

The top ranked ETF receives 100%. The rest are then ranked based on their momentum relative to the leading ETF.  While momentum isn’t stock performance per se, momentum is closely related to stock performance. For example, over the 4-months from Oct thru mid-February 2016, the number 1 ranked Financials (XLF) outperformed the S&P 500 by nearly 20%. In 2017 Technology (XLK) was ranked in the top 3 Momentum Plays for 52% of all trading days in 2017 (if I counted correctly.) XLK was up 35% on the year while the S&P 500 was up 18%.

MONDAY MARKET INTERNALS (NYSE DATA)
Market Internals improved to POSITIVE on the market.
Market Internals are a decent trend-following analysis of current market action but should not be used alone for short term trading. They are usually right, but they are often late.  They are most useful when they diverge from the Index.  In 2014, using these internals alone would have made a 9% return vs. 13% for the S&P 500 (in on Positive, out on Negative – no shorting).

Using the Short-term indicator in 2018 in SPY would have made a 5% gain instead of a 6% loss for buy-and-hold. The methodology was Buy on a POSITIVE indication and Sell on a NEGATIVE indication and stay out until the next POSITIVE indication. The back-test included 13-buys and 13-sells, or a trade every 2-weeks on average.

My current stock allocation is about 55% invested in stocks as of 20 August 2019. This is a conservative balanced position appropriate for a retiree.

INTERMEDIATE / LONG-TERM INDICATOR
Monday, the VOLUME indicator was positive; VIX, SENTIMENT and PRICE Indicators were neutral. Overall, the Long-Term Indicator remained to HOLD.

Payroll Report … Avg Hourly Earnings … Stock Market Analysis… ETF Trading … Dow 30 Ranking

“Trade what you see; not what you think.” – The Old Fool, Richard McCranie, trader extraordinaire.

PAYROLL REPORT (Bloomberg)
“Weak August job gains signaled the U.S. labor market’s slowdown is deepening as the trade war with China takes a toll on the economy, even as some details of the report suggested a recession is far from imminent. Private payrolls rose 96,000, a three-month low…”  Story at…

AVG HOURLY EARNINGS (CNBC)
“Average hourly earnings increased by 0.4% in August and 3.2% over the year, better than expected.” Story at…

MARKET REPORT / ANALYSIS
-Friday the S&P 500 rose about 0.1% to 2979.
-VIX fell about 7% to 15.19.
-The yield on the 10-year Treasury slipped slightly to 1.564%.

We saw late-day selling and a high unchanged volume.  The unchanged volume suggests investor confusion while the late-day selling suggests the Pros are cautious, or at least, they are taking profits.  We’ve seen enough bullish indicators recently for us to sit back and wait for new highs.

-My MACD of Breadth has remained bullish.  The MACD of S&P 500 price turned bullish 2 weeks ago and remains bullish.
-The S&P 500 closed above the 50-dMA for a second day and that’s good.
-5-10-20 Timer system turned bullish yesterday. (The 5d-EMA and the 10-dEMA are higher than the 20-dEMA.)
-New-highs outpaced new-lows 138 to 20 respectively.  Those are good numbers.
-Bollinger Bands were not overbought today.

As always, there are some bearish signs in the mix. The Overbought/Oversold Index is overbought. The Index is always very early. Money Trend slipped a little. There has been late-day selling over the last month. Until we see a lot more top indicators, I will ignore them.

My daily sum of 20 Indicators dipped from +6 to +3 (a positive number is bullish; negatives are bearish) while the 10-day smoothed version that negates the daily fluctuations improved from -14 to -13. (These numbers sometimes change after I post the blog based on data that comes in late.)

I remain bullish.

MARKET REPORT / ANALYSIS
-Thursday the S&P 500 rose about 1.3% to 2976.
-VIX fell about 6 to 16.27.
-The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 1.565%.

More bullishness – we had another strong day today.
-My MACD of Breadth has turned bullish.  The MACD of S&P 500 price turned bullish 2 weeks ago and remains bullish.
-The S&P 500 moved above the 50-dMA by a good margin.  The 50d-MA is 2945.
-5-10-20 Timer system turned bullish. The 5d-EMA and the 10-dEMA are higher than the 20-dEMA.
-77% of volume on the NYSE was up, so we almost had additional back-to-back 80% up-volume days. We’ve already recently had enough to give very bullish indications.

As always, there are bearish signs in the mix.  Bollinger Bands are overbought and the Overbought/Oversold Index is overbought. The Index is always very early; Bollinger Bands are responding to the strong up-move. Until we see a lot more top indicators, I will ignore them both.

My daily sum of 20 Indicators improved from +3 to +6 (a positive number is bullish; negatives are bearish) while the 10-day smoothed version that negates the daily fluctuations dropped from -12 to -14. (These numbers sometimes change after I post the blog based on data that comes in late.)

Today we saw more bullish signs. I think we go up from here and will make new highs.

FED Beige Book … Stock Market Analysis… ETF Trading … Dow 30 Ranking

“Trade what you see; not what you think.” – The Old Fool, Richard McCranie, trader extraordinaire.

FED BEIGE BOOK (Marketwatch)
“Economic activity in the crucial non-financial service sector was either steady or improving across the country through the end of August, according to the “Beige Book” survey released by the Federal Reserve on Wednesday...The overall economy expanded at the same “modest pace” seen in earlier reports this year, the survey said.” Story at…

MARKET REPORT / ANALYSIS
-Wednesday the S&P 500 rose about 1.1% to 2938.
-VIX fell about 12% to 7.33.
-The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 1.469%. (I had a typo here.)

Today’s market internals looked healthier than we have seen in a while. 52-week new-highs outpaced new-lows 219 to 30.  81% of stocks advanced on the NYSE. The volume news was good, too.

88% of the volume was up-volume today. The closing price was high enough to suggest further momentum in the future. While we didn’t quite see a 90% up-volume day, 88% is pretty close and I take this as a very bullish sign that reinforces the strong market action (back-to-back high advancing-volume days) I mentioned Tuesday.

My daily sum of 20 Indicators improved from -3 to +2 (a positive number is bullish; negatives are bearish) while the 10-day smoothed version that negates the daily fluctuations dropped from -7 to -13. (These numbers sometimes change after I post the blog based on data that comes in late.)

Today we saw more bullish signs. I think we go up from here.

Construction Spending … ISM Manufacturing … Stock Market Analysis… ETF Trading … Dow 30 Ranking

“Trade what you see; not what you think.” – The Old Fool, Richard McCranie, trader extraordinaire.

CONSTRUCTION SPENDING (housingwire.com)
"Spending on U.S. construction during July was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1.30 trillion, rising 0.1% from the revised June estimate…” Story at…

ISM MANUFACTURING (CNN.com)
“American manufacturing shrank for the first time in three years this summer. On Tuesday, the Institute of Supply Management's manufacturing index came in at 49.1 for the month of August — its lowest level since January 2016.” Story at…

MARKET REPORT / ANALYSIS
-Tuesday the S&P 500 dropped about 0.7% to 2906.
-VIX rose about 4% to 19.66.
-The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 1.625%.

On the 28th an 29th we saw back to back days with greater than 80% up-volume. This is a very bullish move (when it occurs soon after a 90% down-day) that usually is a bottom (or post bottom) signal. The last time this happened (16 and 19 August) we were Trumped and Chinatized with tariffs.  Here we go again. Some US tariffs went into effect today. Then there’s the ISM number; that didn’t help either.

My daily sum of 20 Indicators slipped from +4 to -3 (a positive number is bullish; negatives are bearish) while the 10-day smoothed version that negates the daily fluctuations dropped from +3 to -7. (These numbers sometimes change after I post the blog based on data that comes in late.)

Futures are up as I write this. We.ve made a triple bottom in the 2841 region with two reversal signals on high-volume.  I think we go up from here.  I have been wrong before, though. We’ll see.

TOP / BOTTOM INDICATOR SCALE OF 1 TO 10 (Zero is a neutral reading.)
