Payrolls … Stock Market Analysis… ETF Trading … Dow 30 Ranking

“Trade what you see; not what you think.” – The Old Fool, Richard McCranie, trader extraordinaire.

PAYROLL REPORT (Bloomberg)
“U.S. hiring rebounded more than forecast in March and the prior month was stronger than first reported, potentially relieving some concerns about a cooling economy…Payrolls rose 196,000…“This a perfect report for the Fed because it actually corroborates what they’ve been saying all along, which is there are no wage pressures,” Subadra Rajappa, head of U.S. rates strategy at Societe Generale SA…” Story at…

RECESSION THIS YEAR? (Financial Sense)
“David Rosenberg, chief economist and strategist at Gluskin Sheff, says the odds of a U.S. recession in 2019 are rising and are probably much higher than the consensus expects…
How firmly do you believe we’ll hit recession in 2019?
“I'm not saying it's 100%. I’ll call it 85%. Those odds are pretty high. This is a high conviction call and…I think we're going into the early stages and it's not going to be anything like 2008 or 2009—don’t get me wrong—but I think after this monumental debt cycle that we've had, especially in the corporate sector, we're going into the other side of that, and that the theme of this year, probably into next year is going to be one of debt deleveraging, and that will come at the expense of aggregate demand. And that's how you get the recession…” Story at…
My cmt: This isn’t the consensus, nor does the stock market seem to agree.

MARKET REPORT / ANALYSIS
-Friday the S&P 500 was up about 0.5% to 2893.
-VIX slipped about 6% to 12.82.
-The yield on the 10-year Treasury dipped to 2.494%.

Volume was still low Friday, about 15% below the monthly average. We still have to wonder if buyers went on strike, but the good news remains: While overall volumes are down, percentages have been good.

My daily sum of 20 Indicators improved from +6 to +11 (a positive number is bullish; negatives are bearish) while the 10-day smoothed version that negates the daily fluctuations slipped from +11 to +20. Most of these indicators are short-term. This is a nice bullish bump.

After holding out, due to my belief that we’d see a retest of the December lows, I decided to increase stock holdings if long and short-term indicators were positive. We are there now. The big concern is that Bollinger Bands are almost overbought which could signal the start of a retreat.

Since it is possible for Bollinger Bands to give an overbought reading for several months, I evaluate Bollinger Bands along with RSI. If Bollinger Bands and RSI are both overbought, it means the odds of a retreat are high. RSI is 63 now so there is room for the S&P 500 to move higher; however, there are some strong short-term bearish signs:

The size of the up-days compared to down days has been falling – that’s mildly bearish. The big issue, and it’s very bearish in the very short term, is that 8 of the days in the last 10 have been up-days and 14 of the last 20-days have been up-days. We’re due for a retreat of some kind. I think I will wait a bit longer for those issues to clear.

Maybe by the end of next week I’ll ether be back fully invested or watching a retreat which would give me a better buying opportunity.

TODAY’S RANKING OF  15 ETFs (Ranked Daily)
The top ranked ETF receives 100%. The rest are then ranked based on their momentum relative to the leading ETF.  While momentum isn’t stock performance per se, momentum is closely related to stock performance. For example, over the 4-months from Oct thru mid-February 2016, the number 1 ranked Financials (XLF) outperformed the S&P 500 by nearly 20%. In 2017 Technology (XLK) was ranked in the top 3 Momentum Plays for 52% of all trading days in 2017 (if I counted correctly.) XLK was up 35% on the year while the S&P 500 was up 18%.

FRIDAY MARKET INTERNALS (NYSE DATA)
Market Internals switched to BULLISH on the market.
Market Internals are a decent trend-following analysis of current market action but should not be used alone for short term trading. They are usually right, but they are often late.  They are most useful when they diverge from the Index.  In 2014, using these internals alone would have made a 9% return vs. 13% for the S&P 500 (in on Positive, out on Negative – no shorting).

My current stock allocation is about 30% invested in stocks as of 9 January 2019.

INTERMEDIATE / LONG-TERM INDICATOR
Friday, the PRICE and VOLUME indicators were positive. The VIX and SENTIMENT indicators were neutral. Overall this is a BLLISH indication.

Jobless Claims … Stock Market Analysis… ETF Trading … Dow 30 Ranking

“Trade what you see; not what you think.” – The Old Fool, Richard McCranie, trader extraordinaire.

JOBLESS CLAIMS (Reuters)
“The number of Americans filing applications for unemployment benefits fell to a nearly half-century low last week, pointing to sustained labor market strength despite slowing economic growth. But the loss of momentum in activity has left some employers unsettled about the economy’s outlook.” Story at…

MARKET REPORT / ANALYSIS
-Thursday the S&P 500 was up about 0.2% to 2879.
-VIX slipped about 1% to 13.58.
-The yield on the 10-year Treasury dipped to 2.515%.

Volume was about 20% below the monthly average. Did buyers go on strike? Up volume continues to fall; New-highs today were disappointing. The good news was that on a percentage basis, internals were good and the S&P 500 was up.

“Trading what I see,” still has me doing nothing. That’s because the long-term indicator remains neutral and the short-term indicator (market internals) has been flopping between neutral and bullish. If markets were in a more bullish situation, the long-term indicator would be positive/bullish. I’ve doubted this rally the whole way; I have been wrong, but it is still very hard increase my % invested in stocks without more bullish indicators at this point.

As noted before, there are hardly any bear signs today in my indictors:
-The overbought/oversold ratio is oversold.  This is an old school indicator that is usually early so I don’t pay much attention to this one.
-Bollinger Bands are nearly overbought, but not there yet.

My daily sum of 20 Indicators dropped from +10 to +6 (a positive number is bullish; negatives are bearish) while the 10-day smoothed version that negates the daily fluctuations slipped from +13 to +11. Most of these indicators are short-term.

There aren’t many bear signs. I remain in the confused camp. I’d like to see the Long-term indicator and the Short-term internals indicator both positive so I can increase my percentage invested in stocks.

We have noted some slowing momentum.  The way I draw the trend lines it looks like the Index is at its upper trend line. Trend lines have flattened after the steep run-up. Some lower prices would be expected near-term.

ADP Employment … ISM Manufacturing … Crude Inventories … John Hussman Commentary Excerpt … Stock Market Analysis… ETF Trading … Dow 30 Ranking

“Trade what you see; not what you think.” – The Old Fool, Richard McCranie, trader extraordinaire.

ADP EMPLOYMENT (BusinessInsider.com)
“Private employers added 129,000 payrolls last month, ADP said Wednesday, the slowest pace of job growth in 18 months. The report raised concerns that official employment data out Friday could fall short of expectations. In February, the US added the fewest private and public sector jobs since 2017.” Story at…

ISM MANUFACTURING (Bloomberg)
“A gauge of U.S. service industries fell in March by more than expected to the lowest level since mid-2017 amid weaker business and new orders, adding to signs economic growth is cooling this year. The Institute for Supply Management’s non-manufacturing index dropped to 56.1…”
My cmt: A number above 50 is still expansion; just at a slower rate.

CRUDE INVENTORY (OilPrice.com)
“Crude oil prices fell today after the Energy Information Administration reported an inventory increase of 7.2 million barrels for the week to March 29. This compared with a 2.8-million-barrel build in oil inventories in the previous week. Right now, inventories are slightly below the seasonal average…” Story at…
My cmt: Oil prices remain important because a large part of the S&P 500 is based on oil related companies and services.

JOHN HUSSMAN Commentary excerpt (Hussman Funds)
“I continue to believe that September 20, 2018 marked the most likely peak of the recent bull market, and that the recent advance most likely represents an aging bear market rally, with steep full-cycle market losses being inevitable. It’s also important to observe the similarity of the recent advance to the short-lived clearing rallies of early-2001 and early-2008, both which restored borderline market internals before failing.” John Hussman, PhD. Full commentary at…
My cmt: I’ve always appreciated John Hussman’s rigorous analytical approach to markets, but I think he places too much importance on Valuation. With more people chasing fewer stocks, it is not surprising that valuations are at extreme levels.

MARKET REPORT / ANALYSIS
-Wednesday the S&P 500 was up about 0.2% to 2873.
-VIX rose about 3% to 13.74.
-The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 2.521%.

“Trading what I see,” still has me doing nothing. That’s because the long-term indicator remains neutral. If we were in a better bullish situation, the long-term indicator would be positive/bullish. I’ve doubted this rally the whole way; I have been wrong, but it is still very hard to get back in the market at a higher %-stocks.

Head and Shoulders Top Pattern?
One of the most widely followed chart patterns is the “Head-and-Shoulders.” We have a possible set-up now. The left shoulder is S&P 500, 2873 on 26 Jan 2018. The Head is the all-time high at 2931 on 20 Sept 2018. The right shoulder is today’s value (matching the left shoulder) at 2873. (The chart below shows the head and shoulders pretty well.) My volume indicator is a variant of OBV (on balance volume). My value for OBV declined at the Head and declined further at the Right shoulder.  This is the set-up as described at…
Importantly, we do not yet have a confirmation of the pattern, because we would need to see declines from the Right shoulder – we need to drop from here. Will the pattern worry traders? We may find out in the next several days.

The Elliott Wavers are predicting a drop below the December 2018 low once the current “B”-wave is completed, at least that was the thinking as of last weekend.
Discussion and chart at…

Still, there are hardly any bear signs today in my indictors:
-The overbought/oversold ratio is oversold.  This is an old school indicator that is usually early so I don’t pay much attention to this one.
-Bollinger Bands are nearly overbought, but not there yet.

My daily sum of 20 Indicators improved from +8 to +10 (a positive number is bullish; negatives are bearish) while the 10-day smoothed version that negates the daily fluctuations slipped from +10 to +13. Most of these indicators are short-term.

There aren’t many bear signs. I remain in the confused camp. I’d like to see the Long-term indicator and the Short-term internals indicator both positive so I can increase my percentage invested in stocks.

“Orders for durable, or long-lasting, goods fell in February for the first time in four months and business investment continued to soften, reflecting a slower U.S. economy early in the new year. -VIX dipped about 0.3% to 13.36.

YIELD CURVE SUGGESTS MARKET HAS PEAKED? (MarketWatch)

MARKET REPORT / ANALYSIS
-Monday the S&P 500 rose about 1.2% to 2867.
-VIX dropped about 2% to 13.4.
-The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 2.5%.

The futures moved up last night when the China PMI data came in higher than expected. That gave us a bullish lean today.

We had a Golden Cross Monday when the 50-dMA crossed above the 200-dMA. That’s the natural order; the 50-day should be higher than the 200-day if all is right with the world. I’m not sure that this means a lot.  The rally has lost steam, but not enough to call a top or a reversal of the rally.  It looked like we were headed down about 3-weeks ago, but internals have improved significantly since then.

Bollinger Bands nearly gave a sell signal today, but RSI did not so there aren’t many bear signs, at least not those indicators that are specifically designed to call tops.

I’ve added a Top/Bottom indicator that I’ll report regularly. It issues a number from -10 to +10, Bearish to Bullish respectively.

There are hardly any bear signs today.  Here are the only ones I could find.
Bear signs:
-Bollinger Bands are nearly overbought, but not there yet.
-MACD is headed down but it looks like it is ready to make a bullish crossover.

My daily sum of 20 Indicators improved from -4 to +4 (a positive number is bullish; negatives are bearish) while the 10-day smoothed version that negates the daily fluctuations dropped from +10 to +11. Most of these indicators are short-term.

There aren’t many bear signs. Perhaps I’ll get back in if the Short-term internals turn positive.
