Unemployment ... Payroll Report ... Momentum Trading DOW Stocks & ETFs … Stock Market Analysis ...

“Trade what you see; not what you think.” – The Old Fool, Richard McCranie, trader extraordinaire.

“Far more money has been lost by investors in preparing for corrections, or anticipating corrections, than has been lost in the corrections themselves.” - Peter Lynch, former manager of Fidelity’s Magellan® fund.

“The fact that so many successful politicians are such shameless liars is not only a reflection on them, it is also a reflection on us. When the people want the impossible, only liars can satisfy.” ― Thomas Sowell

“It has become undeniably clear and obvious to any reasonable person that Donald Trump is experiencing increasing challenges with his speech, language, and memory during these last few weeks and months. Such a conclusion does not require a huge team of investigative journalists: a person only has to watch the corrupt ex-president’s speeches, interviews and other public behavior. For example, at a series of rallies and other events last weekend, Trump repeatedly confused one person with another. Like a broken computer in a science fiction movie, Trump appears to have moments where he cannot speak, appears lost in his thinking, and is more generally confused as he spouts nonsense words and non-sequiturs.” - Dr. John Gartner, former professor at the Johns Hopkins University Medical School. “...both Messrs. Trump and Biden aren’t only weak contenders but massively flawed, old and declining, despised by much of America. In my lifetime there have been lower points in our nation’s politics, but it is hard to recall them just now.” - Carl Rove, Former White House Deputy Chief of Staff under George W. Bush. Biden or Trump? Biden or Trump? Third Party.

THIRD PARTY COMING (The Western Journal)
“The third-party movement calling itself No Labels is moving forward to pick a presidential candidate. MARKET REPORT / ANALYSIS
-Friday the S&P 500 declined about 0.7% to 5124.
-VIX rose about 2% to 14.74.
-The yield on the 10-year Treasury declined to 4.077%.

MY TRADING POSITIONS:
QLD- Added 2/20/2024
UWM – Added 1/22/2024.
XLK – Technology ETF (holding since the October 2022 lows).
INTC – Added 12/6/2023.

CRM – Added 1/22/2024
BA – Added 12/6/2023. I plan to hold Boeing for the time being, although my patience is running out! Technically, there is a lot of support around the 200 level.  If Boeing drops below 200 it will be time to bail out.

DWCPF - Dow Jones U.S. Completion Total Stock Market Index. – Added 12/7/2023 when I sold the S&P 500. This is a large position in my retirement account betting on Small Caps.

TODAY’S COMMENT:
Indicators dipped some, but remained bullish.

CURRENT SUMMARY OF APPROXIMATELY 50 INDICATORS:
Now there are 8 bear-signs and 16-Bull. A week ago, there were 5 bear-signs and 18 bull-signs.

On the BEAR side:
-Friday was a Bearish Outside Reversal Day. According to Investopedia: “This demonstrates that the bulls had control over the market before the bears took the reins in a meaningful way, signaling a shift in the overall trend... For instance, a stock may have a small move higher on the first day, climb even higher the second day, but then sharply decline by the second day’s end... This formation is considered a strong indicator that the prior upward momentum is waning and a reversal is on the horizon.”
https://www.investopedia.com/terms/o/outsidereversal.asp#:~:text=A%20bearish%20outside%20reversal%2C%20also,by%20the%20second%20day's%20end
- The S&P 500 is 12.6% above its 200-dMA. Markets are getting stretched. (The Bear indicator is 12% above the 200-day.)
- All the ETFs I track were above their respective 200-dMA, today, 3/8/2024. That’s too bullish, so it’s a bearish indicator. This indicator will be extended for a week.
- Selling pressure has been greater than buying pressure for awhile

On the BULL side:
- 59% of the 15-ETFs that I track have been up over the last 10-days. (45-55% is neutral.)
- New-high/new-low data is bullish.
- McClellan Oscillator.

NEUTRAL indicators include:
-10.5% of all issues traded on the NYSE made new, 52-week highs when the S&P 500 made a new all-time-high, 7 March 2024. (There is no bullish signal for this indicator, but this is a good, higher than average number that reinforces the notion that breadth is healthy with decent participation in the advance.)
- RSI remains in neutral territory.
- Bollinger Bands remain neutral.
-There have been 11 up-days over the last 20 sessions.
-There have been 5 up-days over the last 10 sessions.

The S&P 500 is 4.1% above its 50-dMA.  That’s high, but not an extreme number.

These indicators suggest we need to be alert to the possibility that markets could retrea
t, and Friday’s Outside Reversal Day is concerning, even though it is not always correct. I’ll watch market action Monday. I may sell leveraged positions if there’s a lot of bearish action. It’s not an easy decision, because the S&P 500 is very close to its lower trendline, suggesting the move is likely to be higher not lower.

LONG-TERM INDICATOR: The Long Term NTSM indicator remained HOLD: PRICE is positive; SENTIMENT, VOLUME & VIX are neutral.

(The Long-Term Indicator is not a good top-indicator. It can signal BUY at a top.)

(The important major BUY in this indicator was on 21 October 2022, 7-days after the bear-market bottom. For my NTSM overall signal, I suggested that a short-term buying opportunity occurred on 27 September (based on improved market internals on the retest), although without market follow-thru, I was unwilling to call a buy; however, I did close shorts and increased stock holdings. I issued a Buy-Signal on 4 October, 6-days before the final bottom, based on stronger market action that confirmed the market internals signal. The NTSM sell-signal was issued 21 December, 9 sessions before the high of this recent bear market, based on the bearish “Friday Rundown” of indicators.)

BOTTOM LINE
I remain cautiously bullish, but I will take profits in leveraged positions when warranted.

“$175,300,000,000,000 is the most important financial number in the world.
The new Financial Report of the United States Government (February 2024) estimates that the financial position of Social Security and Medicare are under funded by that much. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellin signed the report. The amount is unfathomable. Here are two examples for context:
-The gross domestic product of every country on planet earth was only $104.5 trillion last year.

DWCPF - Dow Jones U.S. Completion Total Stock Market Index. – Added 12/7/2023 when I sold the S&P 500. This is a large position in my retirement account betting on Small Caps.

TODAY’S COMMENT:
The Fast Money pundits on CNBC have had a mostly bearish tone in recent discussions, but they have been wrong – “Buy-the-Dip” is still in play.  Market internals were good today with advancers 2x decliners and advancing volume also twice declining volume. “This is not the correction you are looking for. You can go about your business.  Move along.”

My bullish indicators are outpacing the bearish ones by a wide margin. 10.5% of all issues on the NYSE made new-highs today when the S&P 500 made a new all-time high. Even if there was another pullback, my work shows that it would be reasonably shallow, less than 10%.

A pullback is still possible. Markets remain stretched:  The S&P 500 remains in the upper-range of Bollinger Bands, though not overbought yet – same for RSI; The S&P 500 is 13.4% above its 200-dMA, slightly above the point where we get a bear signal. (The Bear indicator is 12% above the 200-day.); All the ETFs I track were still above their respective 200-dMA, today, 3/7/2024. That’s too bullish, so it’s a bearish indicator. This indicator will be extended for a week.

These indicators suggest we need to be alert to the possibility that markets could retreat, but for the time being, I think markets move higher.

CURRENT SUMMARY OF APPROXIMATELY 50 INDICATORS:
Today, there were 8 bear-signs and 17-Bull. Wednesday, there were 7
bear-sign and 17 bull-signs.

LONG-TERM INDICATOR: The Long Term NTSM indicator declined to HOLD: PRICE is positive; SENTIMENT, VOLUME & VIX are neutral.

Now this? It’s sad commentary on Government when this kind of crap is occurring.

DWCPF - Dow Jones U.S. Completion Total Stock Market Index. – Added 12/7/2023 when I sold the S&P 500. This is a large position in my retirement account betting on Small Caps.

TODAY’S COMMENT:
We noted yesterday that the S&P 500 retested the 5057 area at the lower, short-term, trend-line for the Index (depending on the scales used when one draws the chart). The Index improved towards the close, but still closed near its lows for the day. I suggested that yesterday could have been the end of the current pullback.  Today’s action gives us more evidence that the weakness is slowing and is probably over for the time being.

I say “time-being” because markets remain stretched:  The S&P 500 remains in the upper range of Bollinger Bands, though not overbought yet; The S&P 500 is 12.4% above its 200-dMA, slightly above the point where we get a bear signal. (The Bear indicator is 12% above the 200-day.); All the ETFs I track were still above their respective 200-dMA, today, 3/6/2024. That’s too bullish, so it’s a bearish indicator. This indicator will be extended for a week.

These indicators suggest we need to be alert to the possibility that markets could retreat, although I would expect to see further deterioration in indicators first; but there’s no guarantee of that. For now, it is more likely that markets will move higher in the short-term.

CURRENT SUMMARY OF APPROXIMATELY 50 INDICATORS:
Today, there were 7 bear-signs and 17-Bull. Tuesday, there were 7 bear-sign and 16 bull-signs.

LONG-TERM INDICATOR: The Long Term NTSM indicator improved to BUY: PRICE & VOLUME are positive; SENTIMENT,& VIX are neutral.

(The Long-Term Indicator is not a good top-indicator. It can signal BUY at a top.)

(The important major BUY in this indicator was on 21 October 2022, 7-days after the bear-market bottom. The NTSM sell-signal was issued 21 December, 9 sessions before the high of this recent bear market, based on the bearish “Friday Rundown” of indicators.)

BOTTOM LINE
I remain cautiously bullish, but I will take profits in leveraged positions if sell signals pop-up.

Trump Should be in Jail - Jim Young, Republican ... ISM Non-Manufacturing ... Factory Orders ...

“I came away from the [Liz Cheney’s] book ["Oath and Honor, a Memoir, and a Warning] thinking that Liz Cheney is an intelligent, highly organized, honest and patriotic American citizen. Her most impressive attribute is that she is a politician for whom honoring the Constitution and the rule of law comes above all else, including her own political career. She readily sacrificed her career as a member of Congress in order to communicate the truth.” - Jim Young, in his Op-Ed in the Oklahoman.

CHENEY’S BOOK CHANGED MY MIND (The Oklahoman)"
“I voted for Donald Trump — twice. I am a staunch, almost redneck conservative, registered Republican, Oklahoman and American... I believe that Joe Biden and his followers in Washington have been in the top five of the worst political leaders we have ever seen in this country’s history... However, recently, for some reason, I purchased and downloaded a book by Liz Cheney titled "Oath and Honor, a Memoir and a Warning."...
...After reading Liz Cheney’s book, the committee findings and the DOJ indictment, I do not understand how Donald Trump can possibly be considered as a legitimate candidate for the most important job in the world. Frankly, I don’t understand how he is not in jail right now." – Jim Young, Guest Columnist.

The S&P 500 retested the 5057 area today and that is currently the lower, short-term, trend-line for the Index (depending on the scales used when one draws the chart). The Index improved towards the close, but still closed  near the lows for the day.

We also note that today was a was a statistically-significant, down-day. That just means that the price-volume move exceeded my statistical parameters. Statistics show that a statistically-significant, down-day is followed by an up-day about 60% of the time.  Bottoms often occur on statistically-significant, down-days, so today could be the end of a short pullback. Unfortunately, all statistically-significant, down-days are not bottoms so we can’t be certain that the decline is over. I think we may see another day or two down before the pullback is over, but we’ll see

CURRENT SUMMARY OF APPROXIMATELY 50 INDICATORS:
Today, there were 6 bear-signs and 15-Bull. Monday, there were 4 bear-sign and 18 bull-signs.

-The S&P 500 is 11.9% above its 200-dMA and that’s slightly below the point where we get a pullback signal. (The Bear indicator is 12% above the 200-day.)

- All the ETFs I track were still above their respective 200-dMA, today, 3/5/2024. That’s too bullish, so it’s a bearish indicator. This indicator will be extended for a week.

Repeating from Friday:
My position has been overly bullish since the October low in 2022. Markets are stretched enough to indicate that some risk management in the portfolio may soon be necessary.  There are several triggers that would make me sell leveraged positions: (1) There is a huge up-day that is statistically significant in my system; (2) the S&P 500 reaches its upper trend-line in the short-term chart from the October 2023 low; (3) Top indicators warn – i.e., both RSI and Bollinger Bands are overbought; (4) Indicators deteriorate significantly...

...I need to add another signal that would suggest reducing risk: (5) If the S&P 500 breaks significantly below its lower trend-line.

LONG-TERM INDICATOR: The Long Term NTSM indicator declined to HOLD: PRICE is positive; SENTIMENT, VOLUME & VIX are neutral.

BOTTOM LINE
I remain cautiously bullish, but I will take profits in leveraged positions if sell signals pop-up.

The DOW added Amazon to the Dow 30. I’ll add it, but it’s a time consuming effort and may take awhile. Walmart split 3 for 1 today and that took some manipulation in the momentum ranking, too.

TUESDAY MARKET INTERNALS (NYSE DATA)
My basket of Market Internals remained HOLD.
(My basket of Market Internals is a decent trend-following analysis of current market action, but should not be used alone for short term trading. They are most useful when they diverge from the Index.)

...My current invested position is about 70% stocks, including stock mutual funds and ETFs. I’m usually about 50% invested in stocks. I’m “over invested” now expecting continuation of bullish market action.

I trade about 15-20% of the total portfolio using the momentum-based analysis I provide here. When I see a definitive bottom, I add a lot more stocks to the portfolio using an S&P 500 ETF as I did back in October.

TRUMP STILL CLAIMS ELECTION WAS STOLEN
"Do you ever notice they go after the people that want to find out where the cheating was? And by the way, 82% of the country understands that it was a rigged election. You can't have a country with that. A poll came out, 82 percent," – Donald (The Liar) Trump.
My cmt: There is no such poll.  Anyone who has considered the claims of election fraud for more than 5-minutes realizes that Trump’s stolen election claims are completely fabricated.

RENTING STOCKS (Heritage Capital)
“I am in a rent don’t own phase now where I was all about owning in size with leverage since September 2022. I don’t hate the stock market, but it’s had a meteoric rise and risk has really come up along with bullish sentiment. No more fear and despondency. Now folks are giddy, cocky and greedy. That tells me to dance closer to the door and not to sit on my hands.” – Paul Schatz, President, Heritage Capital.

TODAY’S COMMENT:
Monday, the CNBC “Fast Money” crowd (especially Dan Nathan) were noting some of the leaders, made up of the “Magnificent 7” stocks, are showing weakness. According to Dan, that puts the rally at risk since the rally has been concentrated in a few stocks. Yes, it’s a concern, but when I look at the new, 52-week highs, the data doesn’t support that thesis that the rally is getting narrower. Today, 288 issues on the NYSE made new, 52-week highs. One needs to go all the way back to November of 2021 to find a day when more than 288 issues made new highs. However, I do have an issue with the rally.

The rally is due for a pause or pullback because it is getting too stretched - not because it is getting narrower. Today was actually a pretty good day. The down day was small. If the S&P 500 goes sideways for a while, the 200-dMA can catch up and that would eliminate a significant concern that the rally is too extended.

CURRENT SUMMARY OF APPROXIMATELY 50 INDICATORS:
Today, there are 4 bear-signs and 18-Bull. Friday, there were 6 bear-sign and 17 bull-signs.

The most significant BEAR signs have not changed much:
-The S&P 500 is 13.2% above its 200-dMA. Markets are getting stretched. (The Bear indicator is 12% above the 200-day.)
- All the ETFs I track were still above their respective 200-dMA, today, 3/4/2024. That’s too bullish, so it’s a bearish indicator. This indicator will be extended for a week.

“Buried” — Michael Ramirez, political commentary at...
https://michaelramirez.substack.com/p/michael-ramirez-guest-essay-putin?r=ntzh3&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&triedRedirect=true
My cmt: I remember that Kruschev took off his shoe and pounded it on a table as he screamed “We will bury you” at the United Nations. There were other occasions when he made this statement, but the UN incident made Life magazine. There are apologists who now claim the statement was not translated properly.  Perhaps, but I assure you he was not saying “We love the west.” Putin is simply following the old Russian narrative. My opinion: It is impossible that the US will not continue to support Ukraine...unless Trump is elected. Trump’s comments show his lack of understanding of international affairs.

SUPREME COURT HAD TO HEAR THE TRUMP CASE (WSJ)
“Many observers thought the Supreme Court would decline to consider Donald Trump’s claim that presidential immunity shields him from prosecution for his conduct on Jan. 6, 2021... but the justices had little choice but to take up this question because the lower court’s ruling was so sweeping and dangerous. Mr. Trump claims that his allegedly criminal actions were “official acts” taken as president. The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia held that it didn’t matter if they were—that no president is entitled to immunity from “generally applicable criminal laws.” That decision violates the separation of powers, threatens the independence and vigor of the presidency, and is inconsistent with Supreme Court precedent.” – David B. Rivkin Justice Department and White House Counsel official during the Reagan and George H.W. Bush Administrations. CONSTRUCTION SPENDING (MorningStar News)
“Construction spending fell in January as U.S. companies and the government scaled back on projects across the nation amid high interest rates. Spending on construction projects fell 0.2% in January to $2.1 trillion, the Commerce Department reported Friday.
https://www.morningstar.com/news/marketwatch/20240301269/construction-spending-falls-for-the-first-time-since-december-2022

TODAY’S COMMENT:
CURRENT SUMMARY OF APPROXIMATELY 50 INDICATORS:
Now there are 6 bear-signs and 17-Bull. Last week, there were 7 bear-sign and 16 bull-signs.

The most significant BEAR signs have not changed much:
-The S&P 500 is 13.5% above its 200-dMA. Markets are getting stretched. (The Bear indicator is 12% above the 200-day.)
- All the ETFs I track were above their respective 200-dMA, today, 3/1/2024. That’s too bullish, so it’s a bearish indicator. This indicator will be extended for a week.
-Bollinger Bands are overbought. RSI is not, so I tend to ignore this one unless RSI joins the bear party.

On the BULL side:
-MACD of S&P 500 price has flip-flopped recently, but it made a bullish crossover 29 Feb.
-61% of the 15-ETFs that I track have been up over the last 10-days. (45-55% is neutral.)

NEUTRAL indicators include:
-9.6% of all issues traded on the NYSE made new, 52-week highs when the S&P 500 made a new all-time-high, 1 March 2024. (There is no bullish signal for this indicator, but this is a good, higher than average number that reinforces the notion that breadth is healthy with decent participation in the advance.)
-RSI remains in neutral territory.

My stock portfolio positioning has been overly bullish since the October low in 2022. Markets are stretched enough to indicate that some risk management in the portfolio may soon be necessary.  There are several triggers that would make me sell leveraged positions: (1) There is a huge up-day that is statistically significant in my system; (2) the S&P 500 reaches its upper trend-line in the short-term chart from the October 2023 low; (3) Top indicators warn – i.e., both RSI and Bollinger Bands are overbought; (4) Indicators deteriorate significantly.

LONG-TERM INDICATOR: The Long Term NTSM indicator remained HOLD: PRICE was positive; VOLUME, SENTIMENT & VIX are neutral.

The NTSM sell-signal was issued 21 December, 9 sessions before the high of this recent bear market, based on the bearish “Friday Rundown” of indicators.)

BOTTOM LINE
I remain cautiously bullish,, but my plan is to take profits in leveraged positions as noted above.
